Resolved Question: How much is a uk passport worth on the black market?

We had our car broken into yesterday in Portugal, in the car park of a fairly silent rural semi-touristy area. We were away from the car for less than 10 mins. A bag was taken which was not very well hidden on the floor of the front passenger seat. Bag contained 2 passports, mobile, mp4 player, plus some other stuff like a notebook, tissues etc. They obviously didn't have any time/intention to go through the relax of the car (phew!!!!!) which was full of clothes, camping gear etc plus hidden laptops, satnav, bank cards, driving licences etc. To clip a long story short... We went to the local police and reported the incident. 15 mins after we left the station they called us and said the bag had been found discarded close the road so we went to collect it. It contained everything but the mobile and mp4. So... we got our passports back!!!! I am at a loss as to why the thief didnt keep the passports and sell them on the black market. I thought passports, especially UK ones, were hot property. Any ideas? We found the whole thing a little bit surreal and to be honest we were a little suspicious.. A local told us it happens every day there. So why weren't the police on top of it? Or ... maybe they're in on it?! And they just make sure we receive the passports back so we don't report it to the foreign office or something... Otherwise I don't receive it.... why would the thief not keep the passports???

My boyfriend and i have been together 5 years, we split up lat summer and for one year we have been on and off lately we tried to work things out and planned on a family etc repeatedly i feel let down by him but he says im just jealous On a friday i wanted to meet him he told me he was meeting a mate instead, i asked to join him and he was very blunt NO Then one day he says he will arrive to my work, i change my shift to finish early and make it easy for him, then he says he booked a quiz night at his club and he can't look me till 11pm , i ask to join him, he says it's only member and that he will meet me at 11 end of story then on a saturday when i want to meet he is off to a boxing match with mates and last , he tells me i want to spend the weekend together, in my mind i feel so glad, then on tuesday he says he is off to portugal with a mate to check out a property, i went mad at him, i creid and cried to him as i felt like a doormat, he said he was not changing his plans I played the victim , saying i loved him and wanted to be with him and the day he leaves he text em to say why don't you arrive on saturday ?but you told me you were working and couldn\t make it?? he says he loves me and wants a family but that im irrational just because he goes away for 5 days ? am i , am i jealosu, crazy ? or a total doormat? He now plans to spend the bank holiday with me but i feel like i don't even want to have my phone on from next week when he retruns as he feels he can have me as it suits me and im fed up. I adore him and im so sleepy of plauying games but then again if i give up this time he will feel anything he does, i will just acept, even though in his eyes im just a little girl having a tamtrum. Resolved Question: Moving back to the UK?

Some people might think this question is crazy, but I am British and my partner Portuguese. I moved to Portugal 3 years ago, and worked since I arrived here. We possess a property here etc etc. Seriously anyone who knows Portugal well will know the employment here is disgraceful, and i mean nothing like the issues you have in the UK. Even for multi lingual degree educated down to the school leavers there are no jobs! The jobs that are available either only employ you for 6 months or are paid so low. I know people that have worked for 10 years in the same company and never had a pay rise. Anyway due to being from the UK and having family there, we are seriously considering moving back to the UK. Just for the one reason if we do we can actually try to keep money to receive married, have better prospects and more opportunities, in the wish that one day we can eventually move back. My partner is fluent English and we both have years and years of sales and office experience. Is the job situation really as bad as the media says? I have looked in the local area I am from and there seems to be lots of work, every be it not hugely paid but there is work? Reading some of the online papers is very depressing, constant news of no jobs, people fed up of this and that, crime, etc. I would imagine some areas are effected more than others? Any thoughts from people would be a great help. I am from the south east of England

Alongside the media being controlled by the wealthy to influence the weak minded (Just look at the tabloids during the general election, or Fox News in America) and the delegates elected to parliament every being wealthy themselves in order to campaign - thus not seeing the negatives of society - the corruption that is an inevitable feature of capitalist society because of the dog-eat-dog enforced mindset, it creates a situation in which the wealthy will be the people truly in control of a country as opposed to the people - which is the sole goal of democracy. Thus, democracy doesn't truly exist below Capitalism anyway. Another important thing to point out is the lack of social mobility. Through lobbying to keep tuition fees high and general education in poorer areas worse funded than wealthy areas below the guise of 'supporting the economy' or currently 'solving the deficit' which is obviously economically driven. Furthermore, a good measure of direct damage of capitalism is drug use. Drug use is statistically higher in countries with harsher restrictions - more liberal countries such as The Netherlands and Portugal have the lowest use rates in the world, and there is a causation correlation between income and drug use. Tobacco companies obviously use lobbying power to prevent liberalisation, because they want to keep their profits high. This is a very clear description of how profit is considered over human welfare - the absolute conclusion of capitalist society. You can probably understand the libertarian (lack of government interference with the guideline of the hurt principle) point of view when you study the statistics that show societal aims are supported through their principles. [22:35:18] Ollie: Religion is a tool that will always exist in class based society as a way of keeping the lowest class complacent and rally support for imperialism – look the crusades, or the propaganda on every side of every war in history. It's worth noting that Christianity is one of the worst on this aspect, being used by every group in WW2. [22:35:33] Ollie: The Socialist principle (by the way, Karl Marx never differentiated between the words communism and socialism and due to their academic nature and exemplification from linguistic relativity, are the same damned thing) has at it's very root “workers control of the means of production” or the abolition of private property. I prefer the former because it is less misleading. Marx differentiated between “personal” - your home et cetera – and “private” property, which consists of any tool for bourgeois exploitation of the lower classes in order to make profit. So, factories and machinery to name the most obvious. [22:35:39] Ollie: It's worth pointing out that the USSR, China etc never did have workers workers control of the means of production, and in fact combined state and corporate interests to create state capitalism! Resolved Question: Biggest sites for renting flats/small cottages in Spain and Portugal?

I'm looking for something similar to gumtree in the UK, or Leboncoin in France.. A site that lists lots of properties to rent, tiny private ads as well as agency listings. We are looking for a tiny cottage in one of the two countries. So it would be great to receive 2 different sites, one for each country. Thanks for any answers.

Resolved Question: at what stage is the vendor no longer fully accountable for the condominium bills in portugal?

The vendor owes a very big water bill for his site and he is trying to transfer the liability to the purchasers..He was the majority holder on the site up until Auust last year and the 6 became sold and he owned the remaining 6 properties on site..He has refused to set up a condominium and we have been paying to maintain the site and cover the electricity bills but he wont contribute and wouldnt let me have the water bill..Wen I did eventually receive hold of the contract in his building company name the amount owing was ridiculous as there was interest added on and it was beyond our means..Where do we stand legally with the unpaid bill and whats our next step

I have been to Europe a few times--have talked to some Brits,French,and Germans, and they gave me a complete different picture. Greece is broke along with Portugal, French police are afreais to go in some muslim neighborhoods, Brits are very very concern about sharia law being forced on every of BRITAIN, Denmark has banned muslim immigration. Food is four time higher than in the states and gas is 3 times as high. Property is out of sight. every of the people I talked to said the same thing--opportunity to REALLY succeed is minimal. Why do libs maintain that Europe should be America's model, when Europeans want to change their way of life? Dont libs realize the mess that Europe is in? NEUTER------I was there,I paid the prices, dont need a link to tell me what I paid. BTW--if you want the prices of thingsin Europe, on YA, go to travel and punch in a specific country, ask about the prices. Resolved Question: Tax in Retirement - UK or Portugal? Which is the better?

I've worked in Portugal for the past 15 years and coming 65 this month, qualify for my UK state pensions plus a tiny one from Portugal. My wife has received her pension from earlier this year and I realise that increases when payment of mine begins. My tax regime was in Portugal during the time I worked there but we returned to our UK English home in September last year after suffering a slight heart attack when I stopped working. Our UK home is the only property we have owned during this time. I have two tiny company pensions which have been taxed at 20%. We're considering renting our UK home and moving (renting) in Portugal for 7 or 8 months per year. Can anyone advise me on an informed basis if I switched my tax regime in retirement back to Portugal if I would receive a higher net income compared to domicile in UK? Many thanks in advance, John
